The story follows Huxley and his dog Max as they build a team of allies to defend their home against a mysterious invading army. The game features a diverse cast of characters, enormous boss monsters, and a dark world embroiled in war.

Players control units using their unique traits, unit placement, varied attack patterns, and character-specific skills. The adventure includes narrative story maps, optional maps, post-game content, horde mode, three difficulty levels, and an additional hardcore mode unlocked after completion.

Other features include large-scale War levels, environmental verticality, puzzle elements, traps, loot, quests, and 21 individual classes with dual classing.
