The game centers on a world thrown into conflict after the arrival of the Humans upsets the balance between the ancient races. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, and others now struggle for power and survival as ancient artifacts, magical power, and the secrets of a shattered empire are uncovered.

It combines strategy, adventure, and role-playing, with strategic alliances between compatible races, a single-player campaign on the light and dark side, and multiplayer through hotseat play, play-by-email, LAN, or the Internet. It also includes 12 fantasy races, over 50 heroes with upgradable abilities, dozens of spells, and many locations to explore.
