Combat Mission Cold War

Combat Mission Cold War is a tactical wargame set in 1979–1982, where players command US or Soviet formations in “what if” conflicts around the Fulda Gap in West Germany and the early US National Training Center.

Combat Mission Cold War is set between 1979 and 1982, during a period when NATO and Soviet Warsaw Pact forces were shifting away from industrialized warfare and toward the modern digital battlefield. It simulates “what if” conflict scenarios between US and Soviet forces centered on the Fulda Gap and surrounding areas in West Germany.

The game also covers the early days of the US National Training Center as US forces moved away from Vietnam era doctrine and toward AirLand Battle concepts. It is intended as a sandbox for experimentation, including comparisons between different vehicles and equipment from 1979 and 1982.

It includes 15 standalone scenarios set in the US V and VII Corps sectors of West Germany, plus three full-length campaigns: the NTC Campaign, the US West German Campaign, and the Soviet Campaign. Scenarios range from platoon-based actions to large battalion battles.

Features include command of US or Soviet tactical formations, detailed historical organizations and equipment, era-accurate tanks, mechanized infantry vehicles, aircraft effects, and battlefield innovations such as Single and Dual-Purpose Improved Cluster Munitions. The source also mentions the early days of electronic warfare.
